Laurel Nakadate was born in 1975 in Austin, Texas, raised in Ames, Iowa, and currently lives in New York. She received a B.F.A. from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and Tufts University (1998) and an M.F.A. from Yale University (2001). Nakadate has exhibited at the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia in Madrid; the Berkeley Art Museum, California; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City; the Getty Center, Los Angeles; the Asia Society, New York; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; among other institutions. Her feature-length film, Stay the Same Never Change, premiered in January 2009 at the Sundance Film Festival and was subsequently screened at the 2009 New Directors/New Films series at The Museum of Modern Art and Lincoln Center in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the San Francisco Art Institute, and other venues worldwide. She is represented by Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, New York.
