Application Deadline Extended l The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant 2016

The application deadline has been extended to 30 November 2016, 6pm HKT.

Last call for proposals for Asia Art Archive’s (AAA) The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant. With support from The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, the grant offers one-year fellowships to up to three individuals to study the AAA collection and develop historical research projects on topics relating to contemporary art in Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong.

With a panel of judges, including curators and scholars in the field, AAA will assess applicants based on their knowledge of contemporary art in the Greater China region, relevant experience in the field, proposed methodology, and research feasibility.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Scope

Applicants are welcome to draw on AAA’s extensive collection of primary source documents from the Greater China region, and are encouraged to propose their own topics. Applicants can develop research proposals that explore specific periods of time, themes, or phenomena in contemporary art from a broad Chinese context.

Eligible Applicants

Postgraduates (including pre-doctoral fellows) with a research focus on contemporary art or Greater China studies, and independent scholars and writers with solid research and publication track records.

Project Completion

The selected project is expected to begin in Dec 2016 and to complete by Dec 2017.

The top grantee will be required to submit interim reports updating AAA on his or her progress. Upon completion, the top grantee must submit to AAA all documents and original materials collected during the course of the project, a written paper, a complete bibliography, and an inventory of collected materials. The project will conclude with two public presentations by the grantee in Jan–Feb 2018 (one at AAA, Hong Kong).

Runner(s)-up will be required to submit a final paper and give a public presentation in Hong Kong or their relevant city.

Applicants are required to provide tentative timelines for the project.

Budget

AAA will award US$15,000 (approx. HK$120,000) to the top grantee. Budgets should allow for a two-month residency in Hong Kong; research trips to Mainland China, Taiwan, and/or Macau during the AAA residency; and acquisition of new materials.

Up to two runners-up will be awarded US$5,000 (approx. HK$40,000) each for their research projects.

Applicants are required to provide line item budgets with their proposals.

OVERVIEW
 
UHM is Research I liberal arts public university located in Honolulu on the island of O‘ahu. Our campus has approximately 19,000 students and is the flagship of the ten-campus University of Hawai‘i system.
 
The UHM Department of Art and Art History supports a broad vision of artistic and sculptural practice. The sculpture area is one among many studios dedicated to thinking about art and creative practice as an intellectually and materially rich method of inquiry.
 
We are one of the largest departments at UH Manoa, serving over 300 majors, and the only master’s degree granting program in the visual arts in the State of Hawai‘i. In addition to serving our majors who are from Hawai‘i, the continental U.S., and around world, each semester students from other disciplines enroll in our art studio and art history classes to fulfill their university requirements, for the pleasure of exploring a creative medium, and/or learning the richness of global artistic traditions.
 
The department offers degree programs in the disciplines of Studio Art and Art History. We award a BA in each; BFA and MFA in Studio Art; and MA in Art History. The BFA and MFA include concentrations in ceramics, drawing/painting, electronic art, fiber, glass, graphic design, print media (digital imaging, photography, printmaking), and sculpture. The Art History area is unique in the US for its emphasis on Asia, the Pacific and modern/contemporary.
 
Our building is centrally located on the campus. It includes two galleries, a visiting artist/scholar program, and the John Young Museum of Art in Krauss Hall. The museum showcases John Young’s collection of historical objects from Asia and the Pacific in rotation, and is also a learning laboratory that serves our Art History program and the university’s Museum Studies program. The Korean American National Museum’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history, experiences, culture and achievements of Americans of Korean ancestry. In accomplishing its mission, the Museum works to become a center for cultural exchange, arts, and education, a catalyst for sharing ideas and resources, and a center for promoting and celebrating the diversity of culture in this country. The Korean American National Museum seeks a candidate with leadership and/or management experience in a professional environment. The College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks an established studio artist, experienced teacher, and successful administrator to chair the new Department of Art. The appointment will begin September 1, 2014. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful applicant will have the MFA in studio art from an accredited program and a professional profile appropriate for tenured appointment at the rank of Professor. We seek an individual committed to building consensus and facilitating a collaborative environment that respects a full range of disciplinary perspectives. The chair will articulate a vision beyond the traditional structure of academic programs, particularly in integrating digital proficiencies within the curriculum and in connecting academic experience to professional awareness. The chair will work with faculty to shape a progressive vision for the department as it seeks NASAD accreditation. The chair will support the professional growth of faculty, staff, and students and will foster the continued development of a more diverse faculty, student body, and curriculum. The chair will advocate for the arts generally and will encourage collaborations across the visual and performing arts.

The Department of Art, Media, and Design at DePaul University seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor with an interdisciplinary focus in digital art and in print media beginning Fall Quarter 2014. Candidates should be prepared to teach 2-D studio, digital, and seminar art courses in the department’s core curriculum as well as art courses for majors and non-majors in the university’s Liberal Studies program. Additional experience in interdisciplinary artistic practice in a particular field, such as digital imaging within the Mac platform, book art, and/or traditional and non-traditional non-toxic printmaking, etc. is encouraged. Position Description: The Department of Art at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts seeks a
Professor of Sculpture. The Department Art offers both the Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) and the
Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA). The starting date for the position is July 1, 2013, with teaching
responsibilities commencing in September 2013.

Faculty positions at the University of California entail research, teaching, and service responsibilities.
The Department of Art is looking for a colleague producing and exhibiting sculpture at the forefront of
contemporary art. The department seeks someone who possesses a deep understanding of
contemporary art with a thoughtful appreciation of historical precedent, challenging the limits of
existing conventions while embracing both new and traditional methods of production. The successful
candidate must be able to teach sculpture studio courses at all undergraduate levels, as well as
lecture courses in his/her field of expertise to a general undergraduate population. In addition, the
new faculty member should possess the versatility to teach interdisciplinary critique courses,
participate in the mentorship of graduate students, and share in departmental administrative duties
such as program planning and committee participation.

This a growing department of 16 full-time faculty. A heterogeneous group of artists and scholars, the
department values rigor, inquiry, and experimentation over specific ideologies or intellectual methods.
The department’s research and instruction address art in a multitude of cultural contexts from
galleries and museum to cultural arenas beyond the conventional art world. Areas of interest include,
but not limited to, the legacies of modern and post-modern art discourses, “post-studio” practices,
gender and queer theory, deconstruction and postcolonial critique, media and new technologies,
museum and curatorial studies, social practice and public/community cultural work.

Qualifications: MFA or equivalent training; a record of significant research (exhibitions,
commissions, etc.); 3-5 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level (for applicants to the
Tenure-Track position), or a minimum of 6 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level
(for applicants to the Tenured position); and a strong commitment to teaching, research, and service.

CURATORIAL FELLOWSHIP

The Curatorial Fellowship is designed to provide in-depth curatorial experience for a
recent graduate who has earned a baccalaureate or graduate-level degree, with a
concentration in Art History, Curatorial Studies, Visual Culture or a related field.
Applicants must not be currently enrolled in an academic program. Applicants must be of
culturally diverse background and should have a keen interest in curating, excellent
writing and research skills, and knowledge of the contemporary art world. Applicants
must also currently reside in New York City.

The Curatorial Fellow will work under the direction of the Assistant Curators. The
Curatorial Fellow will be responsible for providing administrative assistance to the
curatorial department; developing interpretive materials such as wall text and object
labels; working with permanent collections manager to develop and organize image
database; and developing and mounting a curatorial project in the Studio Museum’s
galleries.
The Curatorial Fellowship is a paid, year-long commitment requiring 30 hours per week
in the office (not to include weekends.) Applicants must be able to handle multiple
projects at once. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is required. Foreign language skills
may be helpful.
