Application Deadline Extended l The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant 2016

The application deadline has been extended to 30 November 2016, 6pm HKT.

Last call for proposals for Asia Art Archive’s (AAA) The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant. With support from The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, the grant offers one-year fellowships to up to three individuals to study the AAA collection and develop historical research projects on topics relating to contemporary art in Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong.

With a panel of judges, including curators and scholars in the field, AAA will assess applicants based on their knowledge of contemporary art in the Greater China region, relevant experience in the field, proposed methodology, and research feasibility.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Scope

Applicants are welcome to draw on AAA’s extensive collection of primary source documents from the Greater China region, and are encouraged to propose their own topics. Applicants can develop research proposals that explore specific periods of time, themes, or phenomena in contemporary art from a broad Chinese context.

Eligible Applicants

Postgraduates (including pre-doctoral fellows) with a research focus on contemporary art or Greater China studies, and independent scholars and writers with solid research and publication track records.

Project Completion

The selected project is expected to begin in Dec 2016 and to complete by Dec 2017.

The top grantee will be required to submit interim reports updating AAA on his or her progress. Upon completion, the top grantee must submit to AAA all documents and original materials collected during the course of the project, a written paper, a complete bibliography, and an inventory of collected materials. The project will conclude with two public presentations by the grantee in Jan–Feb 2018 (one at AAA, Hong Kong).

Runner(s)-up will be required to submit a final paper and give a public presentation in Hong Kong or their relevant city.

Applicants are required to provide tentative timelines for the project.

Budget

AAA will award US$15,000 (approx. HK$120,000) to the top grantee. Budgets should allow for a two-month residency in Hong Kong; research trips to Mainland China, Taiwan, and/or Macau during the AAA residency; and acquisition of new materials.

Up to two runners-up will be awarded US$5,000 (approx. HK$40,000) each for their research projects.

Applicants are required to provide line item budgets with their proposals.

Shifting Movements: Art Inspired by Life and Activism of Yuri Kochiyama (1921-2014) is a multimedia exhibition, organized by the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA), illuminating the legacy of intersectional revolutionary activist Yuri Kochiyama.

Artists of all mediums are invited to submit artworks that embody the key values, themes and milestones from Kochiyama’s prolific and galvanizing life – and how it relates to our contemporary context. Artwork need not reference Kochiyama explicitly, and artists need not have previous knowledge of Yuri Kochiyama’s biography to apply.
Some Key Themes Include:

  • Intersectional understanding and approach to civil rights struggles and the importance of intercultural solidarity and cooperation
  • Defying stereotypes of Asian American women and occupying spaces that transgress boundaries
  • Connecting and Community building through radical hospitality and sharing
  • Commitment to the unrecognized and unglamourous work necessary to support movements, and repeating small gestures that accumulate to create significant change
  • Supporting Political Prisoners and fighting against the Prison Industrial Complex
  • Standing against U.S. and global military aggression

SYMPOSIUM “Writing and Picturing in Post-1945 Asian Art”
(Part II: Graduate Student Workshops)

Center for the Art of East Asia, Center for East Asian Studies (University of Chicago), and PoNJA-GenKon are organizing a three-day international symposium Writing and Picturing in Post-1945 Asian Art to take place in April 2017. The second day of the symposium will include graduate student workshops to focus on the latest scholarship emerging from research done by graduate students and recent graduates in the field. We would like unpublished materials that will point to new directions of research and interpretation.

Symposium Summary
Dates: April 21–23, 2017
Place: Department of Art History, University of Chicago
Co-organized by Center for the Art of East Asia, Center for East Asian Studies, and PoNJA-GenKon

This symposium begins with the examination of two basic human activities, writing and picturing. In different cultures, these two have had historically varying relationships. To name just one, in East Asia, the two (書 and画) have traditionally been entwined, with ink and brush playing central roles. In postwar art, traditional and culturally specific modes of writing and picturing began to undergo transformation, inspired, facilitated, and accelerated in part by increased transnational exchange. In view of developments over the past half century, the symposium Writing and Picturing will survey the state of scholarship and discuss future directions in museological and art-historical studies. The symposium organizers aspire to form a bridge between the established field of modernist art history and newly evolving contemporary art while casting a wider geographical net beyond East Asia. By providing a platform for the presentation of new research on various practices that merge writing and picturing in postwar and contemporary art, we aim to create a watershed for the culturally dynamic rethinking of these fundamental human acts. Eligibility for Submission
Students currently enrolled in graduate-level institutions anywhere in the world and recent PhDs who have received their degrees from such institutions in the past two years are eligible to submit paper proposals.

General Parameters
Within the scope of the symposium, proposed papers should be based on original and critical research within the following parameters:

1) the paper must address the work of art and related media in visual culture (e.g. film, design, architecture, manga, etc.) produced after 1945
2) the artist(s) must have been either born in Asia, of Asian descent, or active in Asia
3) the work must demonstrably relate to aesthetic or socio-political situations in Asia after 1945.
4) the paper may address much broader genres of expression than calligraphy, such as ceramic and textile art, as long as it presents a unique approach to the issue of tradition and modernity.
5) You are welcome to submit more than one proposal. However, you will have only one selected paper to present during the program.

About PoNJA-GenKon
PoNJA-GenKon is an acronym for “Post Nineteen-forty-five Japanese Art / Gendai Bijutsu Kondankai,” an online discussion group of students, art professionals, artists, and individuals interested in contemporary Japanese art across the globe. It was founded in 2003 by two scholars, Dr. Reiko Tomii and Dr. Miwako Tezuka. Also known in its short form, PoNJA, the group fosters communication among the members, shares knowledge with the public, and helps develop this area of study. Today, it has grown to include more than 120 members globally, including all the key leaders and innovators of this still-young field. So much so, “ponja” as a terminology has also come to signify the field of postwar and contemporary Japanese art history.

Asian Women Giving Circle (AWGC) believes culture is an essential part of any strategy for social change. We support Asian American women-led organizations and individual artists in NYC who are using arts and culture to:
  • bring about progressive social transformation,
  • raise awareness and catalyze action around critical issues that affect Asian American women, girls and families, and
  • highlight and promote women’s central role as leaders, creators, developers and managers of these projects.
In this 2016 grants cycle, we anticipate that 5-8 project grants will be awarded, contingent on available funding. The maximum grant amount is $15,000.

We work towards creating an artistic answer to this question by unraveling beliefs that hold women back, excavating family patterns, discovering aspirations, and intuitively creating art through use of found objects.

The South Asian Women’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) is pleased to announce a call for submissions for our annual visual arts exhibition, Ornate Activate, to be held at Shirin Gallery in Chelsea, NYC, opening June 11th, 2015.

Ornate Activate examines the use of decorative motifs, architectural elements, cursive scripts and other forms of pattern making by artists to create and imply content. The exhibition will also examine the employment of culturally specific motifs as social and/or political commentary, as well as cultural indicators of historical referencing. The goal of the exhibition is to bring together a body of work that demonstrates a current interest by contemporary artists to merge and reclaim decorative and craft elements as meaningful and critical content signifiers. Submitted artworks that engage the above can be in any media, including painting, work-on-paper, sculpture, installation, photography, video, performance, Internet-based art, and audio works.

Alexander Campos, Executive Director & Curator of the Center for Book Arts, has over 25 years of museum experience with positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts, and the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning. Campos has served as Executive Director of the Center for Book Arts since 2004, organizing many major exhibitions. including Interweaving Textu(r)al Meaning, The (Un)Framed Photograph, I’ll Cut Thr(U), and upcoming July exhibition /mit ðə detə/: Source Materials Visualized He has an MA from New York University in Arts Administration and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in Art History and Romance Languages.

ALL submissions must include the following as attachments:
– 6-10 JPEGS of artworks available for the exhibition: 820 pixels wide or high, 100 dpi, titled as number underscore last name (ex. 1_Chaudhury)
– Media artworks can be submitted via direct weblinks to preview works online
– Resume/CV as PDF or Word document
– Artist statement pertaining to above curatorial proposal as PDF or Word document

In the body of your email, please include:
– Name,
– Address
– Email
– Telephone number
– Website (if applicable)
– Corresponding image/media script including title, media, dimensions, and date. For media artworks please provide the running time.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and identify as South Asian women. Please note that the gallery and SAWCC cannot provide art shipping or insurance for artworks-in-transit. If the artwork is available for purchase, and it sells during the run of the exhibition, there will be a 50% gallery commission. Detailed instructions on the installation schedule for accepted works will be communicated to the artists after the juried process. Artists will be notified of acceptance in early May. A fateful glance between two ancient warriors in a modern-day disco club resurrects a 5,000-year-old family tragedy and sparks a tense romance.

BROTHER LOVERS is an experimental play written and directed by Brooklyn-based performance and video artist Zavé Martohardjono. The play reinterprets the Mahabharata to reimagine two mythic heroes in a timeless queer tale of love, exile, and disco.

BROTHER LOVERS will première on Friday July 18 at 9pm and Sunday July 20 at 12pm at the Wild Project at 195 East 3rd Street in the Lower East Side as part of the 2014 Fresh Fruit Festival’s program “All Out Shorts III: Legends Through a Glass Queerly.” The play features a diverse cast of queer dancers and theater artists. Interested in crafting a universal narrative about belonging, displacement, and desire, Martohardjono directs and casts BROTHERS LOVERS with performers interchangeably playing its two main characters. Martohardjono weaves in autobiography and poetic personal reflections on identity as a mixed-race Indonesian-American far from “home” and considers Arjuna and Karna’s parable through a genderqueer and transgender lens.

Crossing the Hyphen: Recent Works of Pallavi Sharma

The Addison Street Windows Gallery proudly presents Crossing the Hyphen: Art by Pallavi Sharma, an exhibition organized by curator, Demetri Broxton. Crossing the Hyphen reinvents recent installations and video art created by Pallavi Sharma. Sharma’s work is a subtle conversation in identity politics in America. Herself an Indian-American, Sharma explores how the hyphen serves a dual role: allowing the new immigrant to acknowledge their national origins while also allowing for a reinvented identity within a new country. Her work explores the blurring of national identities which occurs through the process of naturalization and movement. In her piece Carry-On, a suitcase lies open filled with grass and grass seeds. The work represents both the immigrant and the cultural heritage an immigrant brings with them—seeds to be planted in a new land. The piece poses the question of whether these seeds will always be exotic and separate, or over time will they become integrated into the larger cultural landscape?

Pallavi Sharma was born and raised in India and immigrated to United States in 1997. She received her BFA and MFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts Baroda, India and received her Ph.D. in Art History from India’s National Museum Institute of History of Art and Conservation, New Delhi, India. Pallavi’s work has been exhibited widely at venues including the Queens Museum of Art, Exit Art, Art Asia Pacific, and Bishop Museum. At present, she is a board member ofAsian American Women Artist Association (AAWAA) and Director of ‘Inner Eye Art’ an ArtConsulting Firm specializing in South Asian Art.

Demetrie Broxton is an independent curator. He was born in Oakland, CA and holds an M.A. in Museum Studies from San Francisco State University. Broxton has been curator with the City of Berkeley since February 2014. His past curatorial projects include Past Forward at the Sargent Johnson Gallery and Decoding Identity at Museum of the African Diaspora.
