Zhang Hongtu: Expanding Visions of a Shrinking World
Book Launch and Panel Discussion

Zhang Hongtu: Expanding Visions of a Shrinking World is edited  by Luchia Meihua Lee, guest curator of Zhang Hongtu, and Jerome Silbergeld. Twelve leading art experts, art historians, and critics have reviewed the life, career, and artistic development of New York based Chinese artist Zhang Hongtu. Please join us for a conversation about the book and exhibition with Jerome Silbergeld and contributors Eugenie Tsai and Lilly Wei.

A pioneer in contemporary Chinese art, Zhang created the first example of “China Pop” art, and his oeuvre is as diverse, intellectually complex, and engaging as it is entertaining. From painting and sculpture to computer generated works and multimedia projects, Zhang’s art is equally rich in terms of China’s history and its current events, containing profound reflections on China’s oldest cultural habits and contemporary preoccupations. He provides a model of cross-cultural interaction designed to make Asian and Western audiences look more closely at each other and at themselves to recognize the beliefs they hold and the unexamined values they adhere to.

From his early work in China during the Cultural Revolution to his decades as an artist in New York, Zhang reflects the complex attitudes of a scholar-artist toward modernity, as well as toward Asian and Western societies and himself.  Placing Zhang in the context of his cultural milieu both in China and in the Chinese immigrant artist community in America, this volume’s contributors examine his adaptations of classic art to reflect a contemporary sensibility, his relation to Cubism and Social Realism, his collaboration with the celebrated fashion designer Vivienne Tam, and his visual critique of China’s current environmental crisis.

Jerome Silbergeld is the P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Professor of Chinese Art History at Princeton University and director of Princeton’s Tang Center for East Asian Art. A specialist in Song-Yuan period painting, he has published more than eighty books, catalogues, articles, and book chapters on topics in traditional and contemporary Chinese painting, traditional architecture and gardens, cinema and photography. He has also curated and co-curated eight exhibitions, including the first major solo exhibition in America by a Chinese artist, in 1988. His books on cinema and photography include China Into Film, Hitchcock with a Chinese Face, and Humanism in China. On contemporary art, his books includeContradictions: Artistic Life, the Socialist State, and the Chinese Painter Li Huasheng, the first extensive study of any PRC artist, which became a New York Times notable book of the year in 1993; Outside In, on the globalization and loss of “Chineseness” of Chinese art; and ARTiculations: Undefining Chinese Contemporary Art.

Eugenie Tsai has been John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum since 2007. Previously she was Director of Curatorial Affairs at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in Queens, New York. Prior to Joining P.S.1 in 2005, she was an independent curator with projects for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Berkeley Museum; and the Princeton University Art Museum. She held several positions at the Whitney Museum of American Art prior to becoming Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs. Among the exhibitions and installations she has organized are the mid-career survey Threshold: Byron Kim, 1990-2004Robert Smithson, which received the International Association of Art Critics’ first place award for the best monographic exhibition of 2005; and for Princeton University, Shuffling the Deck: The Collection Reconsidered. Dr. Tsai received a B.A. from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University

Lilly Wei is a New York-based independent curator and critic whose focus is global contemporary art. She has written regularly for Art in America since 1984 and is a contributing editor at ARTnews and  formerly one at Art Asia Pacific.  Among other national and international publications, Wei has also written for Art & Australia, Asian Art News, Sanat Dünyamiz, Art Papers, Sculpture Magazine, Studio International, Tema Celeste, Flash Art, Art Press, and Art and Auction, and has frequently reported on international biennials such as those of Venice, Sydney, Cairo, Athens, Reykjavik, Shenzhen and Hong Kong and international exhibitions such as Documenta and Sonsbeek, the sculpture international in the Netherlands.  She has been the author of many exhibition catalogues and brochures on contemporary art, including publications for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, NY; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Knoedler, Marlborough and Pace Galleries, New York, NY. She has curated numerous exhibitions in the United States, Europe and Asia. Two of her most recent exhibitions were “The Museum Imagined” at Danese/Corey, New York, NY, and “Uncanny/Figure” at Dorsky Gallery Curatorial Programs.  Wei lectures on critical and curatorial practices and serves on numerous advisory committees and review panels.  She was born in Chengdu, China and has an MA in art history from Columbia University, New York.

ASIAN AMERICAN LITERARY REVIEW RELEASES SPECIAL ISSUE EXPLORING LEGACIES OF THE VIETNAM WAR, COMMEMORATING 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF FALL OF SAIGON

 

April 30, 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon, the end of a war that claimed the lives of an estimated 58,260 American troops and over 4 million Southeast Asians across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. In the U.S. today, “Vietnam” signifies not a country but a lasting syndrome that haunts American politics and society, from debates about foreign policy to popular culture. But what of the millions of Southeast Asian refugees the War created? What, in this moment of commemoration and reflection, are the lasting legacies of the Vietnam War / American War for Southeast Asian diasporic communities?

 

(Re)Collecting the Vietnam War, a special issue of The Asian American Literary Review slated for release in late summer 2015, poses these questions to leading artists, writers, and thinkers. Novel in form and approach, the issue is an innovative teaching tool, contemplating the conflict as both remembered and traumatic event through a wealth of original multimedia art, a sweeping flipbook animation running the length of the collection, literary and scholarly engagements, and more.

 

Guest-edited by Cathy J. Schlund-Vials and Sylvia Shin Huey Chong, with guest curation by Mariam Lam, Viet Le, and Vo Chuong-Dai, the issue features contributions by Monique Truong and UuDam Nguyen, Lan Cao, Kao Kalia Yang, Nick Ut, Yen Le Espiritu, Anida Yoeu Ali, Sayon Syprasoeuth, Soul Vang, Bryan Thao Worra, Yong Soon Min, Hoi Trinh, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Phothyzan Bounpaul, Frederic Sanchez, Vandy Rattana, Nguyen Tan Hoang, Cathy Linh Che, Bao Phi and Simrat Kang, Mai Der Vang, Jai Arun Ravine, Bee Vang and Louisa Schein, and Ocean Vuong, among others. TEACHING PROGRAM

(Re)Collecting the Vietnam War forms the core of a teaching program that will virtually connect university classrooms across the country to teach and learn together about the War and the worlds it created. You teach the special issue, and we’ll provide dynamic resources and opportunities for interaction with other classrooms. We’ll have in place “digital extras,” videos and podcasts by editors, curators, and contributors, as well as a shared curriculum of activities and projects building from the issue, including interactive virtual spaces designed to put students in conversation with one another. We’ll also help seed one-on-one videoconferencing between classes for those interested. The goal is a national conversation that builds academic community, a dialogue among students and teachers across the U.S. and beyond that challenges and grows our understandings of the War and its complex aftermath.

 

HOW IT CAN WORK FOR MY CLASSROOM

To accommodate a wide variety of schedules and class needs, we’re making the commitment open-ended: we’ll have the program live throughout the fall and early winter of 2015, from September through mid-December, with curricular materials and exchange possibilities available throughout—but your class can participate for anywhere from a week to the entire academic term.

The DAAN business meeting and panel session at College Art Association (CAA) took place on February 14, 2014 at the Hilton Hotel in Chicago. Members began the meeting by sharing memories of important scholar, curator, colleague, friend and mentor Karin Higa.

Announcements included the publication of the Third Text special issue edited by DAAN members Dean Chan and Michelle Yee for the International Network for Diasporic Asian Art Research [INDAAR]: “The Transnational Turn: East Asian Mobility.” Also the new peer-reviewed journal, Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas (Brill), was announced as a collaboration with Asian/Pacific/American Institute at New York University and The Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art at Concordia University. The journal is co-edited by DAAN members Alexandra Chang and Alice Ming Wai Jim and will launch in Winter/Spring 2015. The call for manuscripts has begun and the deadline for the first issue is June 1st (see listing below for more information). The Virtual Asian American Art Museum Project, a partnership between New York University, Getty Research Institute and Smithsonian Institution was also discussed.

The DAAN panel “Asia / Americas: Praxis and Pedagogy” discussed important issues of artistic production, teaching and the academy in relation to the conceptual hemispheric framing of Asia / Americas with panel chair Alice Ming Wai Jim and panelists Richard Fung, Beatrice Glow, Valerie Soe, and discussant Alexandra Chang. After the panel, DAAN members new and old gathered for dinner to continue the conversation in downtown Chicago.

This should be an exciting year ahead!

Call for Papers: Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas

ADVA Journal Asian Diasporic Visual Cultures and the Americas is a new peer-reviewed journal that features multidisciplinary scholarship on intersections between visual culture studies and the study of Asian diasporas across the Americas. First issue is tentatively planned for publication in Winter/Spring 2015.

Essays (between 5,000-6,500 words) and reviews (between 800-1,000 words) should be prepared according to MLA (for humanities) or APA (for social sciences) style and submitted electronically. Proposed artist pages (up to 6 pages) will also be considered.

Floating Library — call for participation — Beatrice Glow

An Announcement and Request from DAAN member Beatrice Glow:
I have been awarded the Franklin Furnace Fund to create FLOATING LIBRARY for the month of September 2014, aboard the historic Lilac Museum Steamship located at Pier 25 along the Hudson River. This pop-up library will host a public reading space on the main deck, a listening room with sound art for introspection, a copy/scan room, workshops (book binding, mapmaking, DIY projects, etc), roundtables, debates (pirates, dreamers and think tanks), and performances. All library visitors will need to power-off their cell phones upon entering. Currently confirmed partnering organizations include Poets House and Center for Book Arts.
 
Given your network of interdisciplinary artists and thinkers, I am writing to see if you would be able to help spread the word:
 
1) PARTICIPATE/SHARE my OPEN CALL for unpublished/little known book projects, manifestoes, and artist writings. Submissions are due May 16th.  
 
2) DONATE books with an emphasis on social movements, art, mapping, poetry, environmental health and children literature to build our reading material collection.
 
3) SOUND EQUIPMENT: DO you have leads to where I can get small-sized music players (small mp3 or ipods) and headphones either donated or on loan? I need 6 sets for the Listening Room installation. Here is the list of participating artists and a page indicating other items we need.
 
4)  LIKE the Floating Library on Facebook to get updates on the progress!
 
5) VOLUNTEERS are needed to man the ship in September. Let me know if you have a few hours to spare and are interested in being onboard.

Studio Visit: Ursula O’Farrell

If you are up for a creative adventure in art, please come join me during this year’s Santa Cruz County Open Studios Art Tour. I’d love to see you. My painting studio is at 800 Estates Drive in Aptos, CA 95003 and will be open from 11am to 5 pm on:

October 8 and 9 (Saturday and Sunday)

October 15 and 16 (Saturday and Sunday)

At my studio, I’ll have signed copies of my new book available. It’s a 100-page color catalogue ($25 plus $2 tax) that includes an in-depth interview by Dr. Peter Selz, along with essays by art critics Mark Van Proyen and Maureen Davidson.
