Professor and Chair: Department of Art

The College of Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks an established studio artist, experienced teacher, and successful administrator to chair the new Department of Art. The appointment will begin September 1, 2014. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications will begin January 3, 2014, and will continue until the position is filled.

The successful applicant will have the MFA in studio art from an accredited program and a professional profile appropriate for tenured appointment at the rank of Professor. Candidates should have demonstrated success in working with students, faculty, colleagues in diverse disciplines, alumni, and the community and a proven record of successful administrative experience. Knowledge of budgets, strategic planning, resource allocations, and academic procedures is essential. Success in securing external funding and experience in studio arts curriculum development are highly desirable.

The chair will provide leadership and vision in a newly independent department with a long tradition of excellence in creative activity and undergraduate and graduate programs. We seek an individual committed to building consensus and facilitating a collaborative environment that respects a full range of disciplinary perspectives. The chair will articulate a vision beyond the traditional structure of academic programs, particularly in integrating digital proficiencies within the curriculum and in connecting academic experience to professional awareness. The chair will work with faculty to shape a progressive vision for the department as it seeks NASAD accreditation. The chair will support the professional growth of faculty, staff, and students and will foster the continued development of a more diverse faculty, student body, and curriculum. The chair will advocate for the arts generally and will encourage collaborations across the visual and performing arts.

The chair will oversee diverse facilities, including the 2008 Studio Arts Building and the Herter Art Gallery, and will manage a budget that supports 16 faculty, three technicians, three staff, a Foundations program integrated with Architecture + Design, and the New York Professional Outreach Program. The chair will manage a curriculum that supports BA, BFA, MA in Art Education, and MFA degrees.
