Application Deadline Extended l The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant 2016

The application deadline has been extended to 30 November 2016, 6pm HKT.

Last call for proposals for Asia Art Archive’s (AAA) The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Greater China Research Grant. With support from The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation, the grant offers one-year fellowships to up to three individuals to study the AAA collection and develop historical research projects on topics relating to contemporary art in Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong.

With a panel of judges, including curators and scholars in the field, AAA will assess applicants based on their knowledge of contemporary art in the Greater China region, relevant experience in the field, proposed methodology, and research feasibility.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Scope

Applicants are welcome to draw on AAA’s extensive collection of primary source documents from the Greater China region, and are encouraged to propose their own topics. Applicants can develop research proposals that explore specific periods of time, themes, or phenomena in contemporary art from a broad Chinese context.

Eligible Applicants

Postgraduates (including pre-doctoral fellows) with a research focus on contemporary art or Greater China studies, and independent scholars and writers with solid research and publication track records.

Project Completion

The selected project is expected to begin in Dec 2016 and to complete by Dec 2017.

The top grantee will be required to submit interim reports updating AAA on his or her progress. Upon completion, the top grantee must submit to AAA all documents and original materials collected during the course of the project, a written paper, a complete bibliography, and an inventory of collected materials. The project will conclude with two public presentations by the grantee in Jan–Feb 2018 (one at AAA, Hong Kong).

Runner(s)-up will be required to submit a final paper and give a public presentation in Hong Kong or their relevant city.

Applicants are required to provide tentative timelines for the project.

Budget

AAA will award US$15,000 (approx. HK$120,000) to the top grantee. Budgets should allow for a two-month residency in Hong Kong; research trips to Mainland China, Taiwan, and/or Macau during the AAA residency; and acquisition of new materials.

Up to two runners-up will be awarded US$5,000 (approx. HK$40,000) each for their research projects.

Applicants are required to provide line item budgets with their proposals.

Please join us on Sunday, April 12, 5–7pm for a private preview of North Pole Futures, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong / New York-based artist Wong Kit Yi. Gallery founder Prem Krishnamurthy will give an overview of the show and introduce the artist. North Pole Futuresremains on view through April 26.

For the duration of the exhibition, Ali Wong, investment manager for Wong Kit Yi, offers intrepid collectors a chance to commission a custom-made work, which will be created by the artist this fall on a sailing expedition to the North Pole.

Prospective patrons may choose three elements out of Wong’s lists: a date, a color, and a weird word. These three terms will be combined together in a photographic, sculptural, performative, or painterly manner in the Arctic. The price of each work is generated by a complex calculation that factors together weather conditions, sun cover, moon illumination, and randomized variables; this determines both the artwork price and a percentage of the sale that will be donated to a nonprofit organization of the artist’s choosing. Patrons thus become co-producers, fellow adventurers, speculative investors, and inadvertent philanthropists all at once.

The exhibition features texts, objects, and time-based works. Video interviews with select experts — including an art dealer, a commodities trader, a pawnbroker, and a fishmonger — consider the nature and techniques of valuation and pricing. The exhibition also includes a publication and website wongfutures.com for contracting the artworks.

There are only a limited number of contracts for sale, so don’t wait to invest in the future now.
Wong Kit Yi is an artist based in Hong Kong and New York. NYU Global Asia/Pacific Art Exchange — July 8-22, 2013 — Shanghai | Hong Kong | Canberra | Wollongong | Sydney

NYU Global Asia/Pacific Art Exchange

The Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU is launching the first phase of the inter-institutional Global Asia/Pacific Art Exchange from July 8-22, 2013 in Shanghai, China; Hong Kong; and Wollongong, Sydney, and Canberra, Australia, focusing on Asian/Asian diasporic art globally.

The exchange will bring together scholars, curators, and artists from each site and is meant to be generative for research, resulting in publications, exhibition development, and other research-based projects and programs to share and disseminate research, strengthen international networks of scholars and curators, and create ongoing dialogue between international colleagues, arts communities, and wider publics in the US, Asia/Pacific region, EU, Latin America, Africa, and Middle East in the expanding field of Asian/Asian Diasporic Art and Visual Cultures.

Through international site visits, symposia, public dialogues, and ongoing working sessions, the exchange aims to build sustained multi-year inter-institutional and scholarly connections to encourage a broader transnational and comparative diasporic discourse while recognizing the continual importance of local contextualization and place.

2013 NYU Global Asia/Pacific Art Exchange Public Programming

In 2014, the exchange will travel to Washington, DC and New York City. Future phases of the exchange are planned for Australia, Indonesia, Delhi, London, Argentina, and Ghana.
