The Museum of Chinese in America in New York City (MOCA) will host a scholarly symposium in conjunction with MOCA’s upcoming exhibition Oil & Water: Reinterpreting Ink, opening April 24th. The exhibition will feature the work of three renowned Chinese contemporary artists: Qiu Deshu, Wei Jia, and Zhang Hongtu.

This symposium is composed of experts in the field of Chinese and American art history who will discuss the trajectory of Chinese ink art from traditional landscape painting and calligraphy to the creative reinterpretation of these historic models, reflecting on the social, political and artistic ramifications of their development. The dialogues will unpack the intellectual importance of the ever-developing ink genre and the role these artists play in shaping contemporary art in New York.

Tenured or Tenure-Track Position in Sculpture
Position Description: The Department of Art at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts seeks a
Professor of Sculpture. The Department Art offers both the Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) and the
Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA). The starting date for the position is July 1, 2013, with teaching
responsibilities commencing in September 2013.

Faculty positions at the University of California entail research, teaching, and service responsibilities.
The Department of Art is looking for a colleague producing and exhibiting sculpture at the forefront of
contemporary art. The department seeks someone who possesses a deep understanding of
contemporary art with a thoughtful appreciation of historical precedent, challenging the limits of
existing conventions while embracing both new and traditional methods of production. The successful
candidate must be able to teach sculpture studio courses at all undergraduate levels, as well as
lecture courses in his/her field of expertise to a general undergraduate population. In addition, the
new faculty member should possess the versatility to teach interdisciplinary critique courses,
participate in the mentorship of graduate students, and share in departmental administrative duties
such as program planning and committee participation.

This a growing department of 16 full-time faculty. A heterogeneous group of artists and scholars, the
department values rigor, inquiry, and experimentation over specific ideologies or intellectual methods.
The department’s research and instruction address art in a multitude of cultural contexts from
galleries and museum to cultural arenas beyond the conventional art world. Areas of interest include,
but not limited to, the legacies of modern and post-modern art discourses, “post-studio” practices,
gender and queer theory, deconstruction and postcolonial critique, media and new technologies,
museum and curatorial studies, social practice and public/community cultural work.

Qualifications: MFA or equivalent training; a record of significant research (exhibitions,
commissions, etc.); 3-5 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level (for applicants to the
Tenure-Track position), or a minimum of 6 years of teaching experience at the post-secondary level
(for applicants to the Tenured position); and a strong commitment to teaching, research, and service.
