C.V. Starr Fund for A/P/A Research
About the Fund
The C.V. Starr Fund for Asian/Pacific/American Research awards grants to NYU students, NYU adjunct faculty members, and A/P/A Institute visiting scholars and research affiliates working on academic and/or community projects with particular emphasis on the New York metropolitan region. The goal of this fund is to promote a convergence of theory and practice in Asian/Pacific/American studies and its related fields by providing financial support for research expenses and/or conference participation.
The C.V. Starr Fund for Asian/Pacific/American Research is administered by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU, which provides a space for the sharing of scholarship, art, activism, and other cultural and political exchanges about Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in New York City and beyond.
Guidelines
For the 2026-27 grant cycle, NYU students, NYU adjunct faculty members, and A/P/A Institute visiting scholars and research affiliates may apply for up to $2,000 to support field work, research, or conference participation.
Recipients may be awarded the grant up to two times, but only once per application cycle. Please note that awards granted to non-US citizens or non-US permanent residents may be subject to a tax rate of up to 30% depending on existing tax treaties.
Application requirements
- A one to two-page project description. The description should demonstrate how the applicant’s project or conference participation will advance the field of Asian/Pacific/American studies and contribute to existing scholarship.
- A detailed budget outlining how the applicant plans to use the grant funds, along with a list of any other funding sources.
- A signed letter of recommendation (preferably from an academic advisor or faculty member supervising the project, to be emailed by the recommender to amitam@nyu.edu by the application deadline). Letters of recommendation are not required for Visiting Scholars, but are required for all other applicants, including Research Affiliates.
- Additional relevant supporting materials (optional).
We suggest students confer with faculty advisors on their proposals prior to submission. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

- Tuesday, January 26, 2027 at 5:00 p.m. ET for Spring 2027 (January-May 2027) activity
- Tuesday, May 4, 2027 at 5:00 p.m. ET for Summer 2027 (June-August 2027) activity
