Michelle Lee, Visiting Scholar 2025-26
Michelle Lee’s research projects broadly address Asian Americans active in progressive and conservative coalitions. Specifically, Lee’s first project examines Asian Americans’ perceptions of and engagement with progressive coalitions in New York City (e.g., racially diverse progressive churches), while her second project examines people’s perceptions of Asian American activists in racially diverse coalitions that advocate for conservative causes (e.g., against affirmative action).
Michelle Lee is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience at Amherst College, and lab director of the Stereotypes, Inequality, & Collective Action (SICA) Lab. She is also affiliated with the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Studies Program. She completed her undergraduate studies in English & American literature at NYU, a post-baccalaureate Psychology certificate at Columbia University, and her PhD in Social Psychology from NYU. Lee’s research examines the effects of people’s stereotypes of racially diverse activists, how they inform their understanding about inequality and shape people’s sociopolitical attitudes, and how they predict collective action behaviors.
