Message from the Director
Welcome back! I’m so honored to be writing to you as the new director of the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU. Since its founding nearly thirty years ago, the Institute has made possible an incredible range of research, events, and exhibitions about the histories, politics, arts, and cultures shaped by Asian-Pacific encounters in the world. I look forward to connecting with you as we continue to build on its record of service and achievement and to imagine new initiatives together.
We are delighted to kick off this academic year with Sống: Photographs by Ocean Vuong, an exhibition of novelist and poet Ocean Vuong’s intimate photographs of diasporic Vietnamese life, labor, and loss. Details about the opening reception on Thursday, October 29 will be announced in the coming weeks. Inspired by this work, and by the many vital responses to the challenges of this moment, we’re focusing our events and conversations on the theme of “Liveliness.” Please join us as we explore what makes our communities, cities, and environments more livable–and keeps us alive to the possibilities for collective flourishing.
Thuy Linh Nguyen Tu is Professor in the Department of Social and Analysis at NYU. She is the author or editor of five books, most recently the award-winning Experiments in Skin: Race and Beauty in the Shadows of Vietnam (Duke University Press, 2021). At NYU she has served as faculty director of College Honors, co-leader of the Mellon Sawyer Seminar on “Transpacific Thought and the Problem of Asia,” and faculty director of the NYU Prison Education Program’s Research Lab.
