About the Visiting Scholar & Research Affiliate Programs
The A/P/A Institute at NYU Visiting Scholar & Research Affiliate Programs extend specified courtesy titles and privileges to scholars of distinction who visit the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU in order to engage in research and scholarship, and in general scholarly and cultural interaction with New York University’s faculty and students. The courtesy title may not be granted for the purpose of providing free courses or other privileges to graduate or post-graduate students, or for the sole purpose of providing library privileges.
Visiting Scholars and Research Affiliates are considered guests of the University and the A/P/A Institute who may visit for a temporary period of up to one year (with a possible one-year renewal). As non-employees, they have no teaching or other responsibilities, and are not entitled to salary, housing, or benefits other than those privileges cited below. Visiting Scholars and Research Affiliates covered by these programs may not in any way perform in the role of an employee at New York University.
Eligibility: The title Visiting Scholar may be granted to scholars with or without academic appointments at other institutions who are sufficiently proficient in their disciplines to be accepted as colleagues by the University’s faculty. A PhD or terminal degree is required.
Those without a PhD or terminal degree will be eligible for the title of Research Affiliate (formerly Visiting Academic). The application process is the same for both titles.
Privileges: Visiting Scholars and Research Affiliates may participate in colloquia, audit classes, consult members of the faculty, and use University Libraries. Shared office space at A/P/A Institute is available on a limited basis. The University does not provide assistance with housing or visas. For the 2026-27 academic year, the appointment will be from September 1, 2026-August 31, 2027.
