An Evening With Tae Won Yu
Presented by The Colloquium for Unpopular Culture. Co-sponsored by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU.
Growing up as an immigrant teenager in New York in the 1980s, Tae Won Yu attempted to navigate his new surroundings by browsing the city’s libraries, used bookstores, record stores, and junk shops, collecting scraps and ephemera that seemed to hold clues that might help him decode this world. That lifelong hunger for looking and collecting informs his work such as the acclaimed Antiquarian Sticker Book series which transforms historical residues into richly layered collages and “printed hallucinations.”
This evening, in conversation with Andrew Lampert, Yu traces the influence of chromolithography on desire, collecting, and popular visual culture—from the rise of printed ephemera through pop art and punk rock—while sharing his own journey through the streets, antiquarian palaces and dust havens of New York City.
Tae Won Yu is an artist, designer and musician known for his handmade approach to typography, illustration and graphic design. A founding member of Kicking Giant, he has also created album artwork for artists such as Built to Spill. He is the author of the bestselling Antiquarian Sticker Book series.
Andrew Lampert is either an artist, archivist, curator, writer, or book editor. No one knows for sure. He co-publishes The Further Reading Library with Christine Burgin, and co-authors the art advice column Hard Truths with Howie Chen for Art in America.
