Each year, the A/P/A Institute at NYU sponsors scholars and artists to further research projects using the libraries and archives at NYU. This semester, the Institute hosts its second Scholar Slam featuring 10-minute (and 10-slide) presentations from current Visiting Scholars. Selma Bidlingmaier traces the current housing crisis in New York City to the twentieth century Progressive Movement, during which time a system of meritocracy, informed by discourses of Social Darwinism and eugenics, created social hierarchies based on imperialist taxonomies of race and cultural assimilation. Beatrice Glow channels the Apprentice of the Ghost of Gauguin, divulging western-centric social imaginaries through a carousel of color and spices–all part of her artist book project, Post-Colonial Pantone Palette. Ryan Wong shares his findings on the development of Asian American identity through activist and artistic practices of the 1970s and 80s. Andy Yan examines the ownership patterns of real estate in New York City, with a focus on Manhattan’s Chinatown, and investigate the relationships (if any) between these patterns and transnational flows of people and capital from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
