KŪKULU: Mauna Kea Update & Workshop with Kumu Hula Lanakila Mangauil

Kumu Hula Lanakila Mangauil will teach a mele (song) and share an update on Mauna Kea as a member of the newly formed Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority. This workshop will take place outside and in front of KŪKULU: Pillars Standing Together, a traveling art exhibition honoring the protectors of Mauna Kea. Mangauil is the founder of HŌʻĀ, where KŪKULU first debuted in March 2018.

No registration is required. Participants are encouraged to bring water with them and dress for the weather as this program will take place outdoors.

Lanakila Mangauil is a Kanaka Maoli, born and raised in Hāmākua, Honokaʻa, of Hawaiʻi Island. Growing up in the forests of ʻĀhualoa and down in Waipiʻo Valley, he was raised by and able to learn from a wide range of Hawaiian practitioners. After graduating from Kanu O Ka ʻĀina NCPCS, he went on to teach in the DOE system, and continues to do so nearly two decades later. Upon founding the Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hāmākua (2016), he expanded his reach of cultural education locally, nationally, and internationally. A lifelong student of Hula and ritual, Mangauil received the title of Kumu Hula through the ceremonial right of uniki under Kekuhi Kanahele and Taupouri Tangaro. He is best known for his activism and leadership in the movement to protect Maunakea and has served on the official Hawaiʻi State appointed Maunakea Working Group charged with the creation of a new management body for wahi kapu. He is a co-author of the revolutionary economic reform document, ʻĀina Aloha Economic Futures.

Directions and accessibility: The Schwartz Plaza Vitrines are visible to the public 24/7 in the brick passage-way between NYU Bobst Library and NYU Stern, directly south of Washington Square East and across from founder’s memorial.
