A/P/A Gallery Inaugural Exhibition Opening, Prints of Pop (& War)

Join us as we inaugurate our new gallery space and celebrate the opening of Prints of Pop (& War), a mini-retrospective featuring screen prints and lithographs by the prolific Roger Shimomura, A/P/A’s 2012-2013 Artist-in-Residence. Objects from the artist’s personal collection will be featured alongside the works related to them. The artist and curator Roger Shimomura and NYU Professor Crystal Parikh offer remarks. Acclaimed for his poignant, bright-colored prints and paintings, award-winning artist Roger Shimomura’s work challenges constructions of the racialized “other” and calls attention to the power of material and pop culture to normalize whiteness. He was born in Seattle, Washington and spent two years of his early childhood in Minidoka (Idaho), one of ten concentration camps for Japanese Americans during World War II. He holds the title of Distinguished Professor of Art Emeritus from the University of Kansas where he taught for 35 years. His work is in the permanent collections of over 85 museums nationwide. Crystal Parikh is Associate Professor in the Department of English and the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University. Her areas of research and teaching include Asian American studies, Latino studies, critical race theory, theories of gender and sexuality, and twentieth-century and contemporary American literature. In addition to several articles, Professor Parikh is the author of An Ethics of Betrayal: The Politics of Otherness in Emergent U.S. Literature and Culture (Fordham UP) and is currently writing a new book about human rights politics and contemporary U.S. writers of color.
