Artist Yayoi Kusama and art dealer Leo Castelli both launched their careers in the multicultural downtown scene of the 1950s. In this lecture, Midori Yamamura (JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow, The National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo) will examine how, with the rise of the global art market, Kusama’s work became marginalized—an experience that distinctively shaped her art. This program is offered in conjunction with Inventing Downtown: Artist-Run Galleries in New York City, 1952-1965, an exhibition on view at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery, January 10-April 1, 2017.
Cosponsored by the NYU Department of Art History, Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU, and NYU’s Grey Art Gallery.
No reservations required, seating is limited. Photo ID required for entrance to NYU buildings.
