A companion workshop to Asian American Media Activism: Addressing Culture, Citizenship, and Coloniality with Thenmozhi Soundararajan, Christina Xu, and Mark Tseng Putterman

In addressing the implications of the current U.S. administration on our political and material conditions, this workshop focuses on the convergence between media activism and practices of solidarity within Asian/Asian American and Pacific communities and across other communities of color. The goal of this interactive skill-sharing and community building workshop is to collectively commit to tangible, achievable, and sustainable activism. This session approaches media activism across a range of platforms, spaces, and networks, featuring presentations and guidance from media professionals and practitioners, organizations, and individual activists who utilize media for social justice.

In breakout sessions, participants will reflect on the myriad issues that need attention and action, on their digital media consumption, production, and curation. Participants will also analyze case studies of media campaigns, build strategies for digital security, and develop concrete media tactics. The goal is to walk away from this workshop with tangible and achievable next steps for their activism.

This session is intended for those who self-identify as Asian, South Asian, West Asian, and/or Pacific Islander, and/or a member of those diasporas.

Participants must be able to attend the full 3 hour workshop and are encouraged to attend the companion Asian American Media Activism event on Thursday, February 16 at 6PM (239 Greene Street, 8th Floor).

If you have one, please bring your laptop! A light lunch will be served. For more information, please email Rachel Kuo (rachel.kuo@nyu.edu).
