Transpacific Experiments – Imagining Music, Practice, and Writing

Miki Kaneda‘s Transpacific Experiments: Intermedia Art in 1960s Japan (University of Michigan Press, 2026) analyzes intermedia as a multimodal practice that gives form to errant possibilities, unfolding in spaces of the everyday. In the book, Kaneda contends that intermedia extends, exceeds, and at times unsettles frameworks for experimental practices, revealing the limitations of any single political or aesthetic lens.
With the book as a point of departure, Ethiraj Gabriel Dattatreyan (NYU Department of Anthropology) and Angie Pittman (NYU Tisch Department of Dance) join Miki Kaneda (NYU Center for the Humanities) in a conversation about how we might imagine practice (music, dance, film, ethnography, and beyond) as ways of thinking about writing and remembering how art weaves history and memory. Moderated by Cristina Vatulescu (NYU Center for the Humanities).
